TheUniversity of Georgia YoungDawgsProgram is a high school internship program designed to prepare high-achieving high school juniors and seniors for post-secondary education (hopefully at UGA) and future careers in their areas of interest. Students can participate in the Academic School Year Young Dawgs Program or the Summer Science Young Dawgs Program. Application process is competitive and students from public, private, and home schools are welcome to participate. Students are required to have a GPA of at least 3.5 in order to participate. The program is designed to maintain a seamless pipeline from high school to the university to the workforce.
We have had over 450 students participating in unpaid internships on campus in placements throughout the university as well as in the community. Last year, 56% of our Young Dawgs seniors were accepted into the University of Georgia, while up to 93% were accepted into a college or university.
Students who participate in the Academic School Year Program are usually referred by their schools. Students can participate in one or two semesters. Internships are approximately 130 hours per semester. Students indicate their areas of interest through their interview with Young Dawgs staff, as well as their cover letter and resume. During the academic school year, students receive high school credit for successful completion of the program. There is no cost to participate in the program.
The Summer Young Dawgs Program is a 6 week, 20 hours per week (on average), unpaid internship program that focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) areas. Students are assigned to a professor based on student’s interest after interview with professor. Internship placements are competitive. There is no cost to participate in the program. |
