Flexible spending accounts (FSA)

Flexible spending accounts allow you to pay for eligible expenses by contributing to a pre-tax account via payroll deduction, thus reducing your taxable income. The funds in these accounts must be spent during the plan year or they are lost; therefore, plan conservatively when determining your annual contributions.  If you terminate employment, claims against funds in your account must be submitted within 90 days of your termination date or these funds will be lost.

After enrolling in an FSA, you will receive a welcome letter or email with instructions to activate your account. If you lose the instructions, here's how to activate your Optum account.

The health savings account allows you to pay for qualified medical expenses (not covered by medical or dental insurance) with before-tax dollars by making pre-tax contributions from your payroll check. Your HSA rolls over from year to year. Your enrollment stays in effect until you cancel it; however, if you change to a non high-deductible health plan, you are not allowed to contribute to an HSA. NOTE TO MEDICARE-ELIGIBLE EMPLOYEES: If you are enrolled in Medcare parts A or B, you are not eligible to contribute to a health savings account.

NOTE: If you use your HSA debit card to pay for qualified health care expenses, be sure to save copies of your receipts and related documentation. IRS regulations require you to substantiate expenses if you are audited.
