Birth, adoption, or death of a dependent

Birth or adoption
Newly qualified dependent children are eligible for coverage under your health plan. However, you must submit an application to add them to your plan within the designated timeframe in order for them to be enrolled. Dependents, including newborn babies, are not automatically covered under your policy.

If you are covered under one of the University System of Georgia (USG) health plans, you have 31 days from the date of the birth or adoption in order for coverage to become effective the date of the event.

What you need to do
To enroll your child or other eligible dependent for coverage, you must:

  • Go to the HRconnection Web site and select the "Change coverage" tab. Select the reason for the change (Birth/adoption of child) and complete the remainder of the online form. When you press the "Send" button, this information will be forwarded to UGA HR. You will be contacted regarding the documentation you must provide to complete your request. Documentation may include a copy of the child's birth certificate, hospital-provided proof of birth letter, or court documentation verifying the adoption.

When coverage begins
If you submit request for coverage changes (using HRconnection) and documentation to add your child within 31 days of the birth date or adoption date, coverage for your child will become effective the date of the birth or adoption.

Other benefits to consider
As a result of your birth or adoption, you may also be able to make changes to other benefits. For birth or adoption, you may enroll your new child only. Contact the Employee Benefits for information about enrolling in or changing the following benefits:

  • Dental (Only if employee is currently enrolled in the University System dental plan. If you do not add your child at this time, you may not be eligible to enroll them at a future time)
  • Medical and dependent care spending accounts
  • Child life insurance
  • Accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D)
  • Beneficiary designations for life insurance, AD&D, retirement account
  • Tax withholding
  • Georgia 529 higher education savings plan
