Health Insurance

NOTE: Blue Cross/Blue Shield (health plan administrator) has a dedicated toll-free customer service number for all insurance plans except Kaiser Permanente: 1-800-424-8950.

Effective January 1, 2010, the University of Georgia offers its benefit-eligible employees a choice of four medical plans provided by the University System of Georgia. The University System health plans are specifically designed to help employees avoid severe financial difficulty when facing catastrophic medical expenses.

Premium rates are adjusted periodically to maintain the plans on a sound financial basis. Premiums are deducted from your payroll check before federal, state, and FICA taxes are applied.

Health insurance enrollment:
If you wish to enroll in the University System health plan, you must do so within 31 days of your employment date. If you do not enroll during this period, you must wait until the annual open enrollment period, unless you experience an IRS-approved change in family status.

Eligible employees may choose one of four health insurance plans, including two choices in the HMO category:

Indemnity plan (through 12/31/09 only)
PPO plan
HSA PPO plan (high deductible)
BlueChoice HMO
Kaiser Permanente HMO

For Indemnity Plan Participants:

The Indemnity plan is not available after December 31, 2009. The information in this box is provided only for current Indemnity plan participants through December 31, 2009.

HSA PPO (high deductible) Plan Participants:

Indivduals who enroll in the HSA PPO plan are eligible to open a health savings account (HSA). The Board of Regents has an agreement with USBank whereby you may contribute to your HSA via pre-tax payroll deduction. You are not required to use USBank, but if you choose another HSA, you will NOT be able to use the payroll deduction feature. If you enroll in the HSA PPO plan, you will receive a Welcome kit from USBank.

Estimate your drug costs under the HSA PPO plan. Visit the BOR Blue Cross Blue Shield site. Under "Learn More," select "Drug Cost Estimator."

Learn more about the HSA PPO by viewing the Blue Cross Blue Shield slide show. (This is a manual show with no sound; change the slides using the spacebar.)
