Health Insurance
The information on this page relates to health insurance options effective January 1, 2012.
This information is only a summary of the benefits available to University of Georgia employees. The provisions and details of each plan described in this document are governed by the contracts negotiated between the University of Georgia, the University System of Georgia, and individual insurance companies. All benefits are subject to change at the discretion of the Board of Regents or the University of Georgia. If there is a difference between the information in this summary and the actual benefit contracts, the terms and conditions of the contracts prevail.
The University of Georgia offers its benefit-eligible employees a choice of four medical plans provided by the University System of Georgia. The University System health plans are specifically designed to help employees avoid severe financial difficulty when facing catastrophic medical expenses.
Premium rates are adjusted periodically
to maintain the plans on a sound financial basis.
Premiums are deducted from your payroll check before
federal, state, and FICA taxes are applied.
Health insurance enrollment:
If you wish to enroll in the University System health plan, you must do so within 31 days of your employment date. If you do not enroll during this period, you must wait until the annual open enrollment period, unless you experience an IRS-approved life event change.
New-hire coverage start dates
Benefits coverage begins the first day of the month following the date the employee enrolls using the MyBenefits system. HOWEVER, if an employee's hire/start date is the first day of the month and the employee enrolls on or before his/her hire date, coverage will begin on the hire date.
Newly-hired ACADEMIC CONTRACT FACULTY ONLY: Benefits coverage will begin on the first day of the contract IF the faculty member enrolls on or before the contract date. If the contract faculty member enrolls after his/her contract start date, benefits will start on the first day of the month following enrollment.
Covering dependents:
You must provide supporting documentation in order to cover dependents on your health plan. If you do not provide this documentation as you are enrolling, your dependent will NOT be added to your coverage.
